It is traditional for women to wear twirl-able, brightly-patterned, skirts to a contra dance. Some dancers enjoy twirling, so the skirts feel light and airy while twirling, and make for a festive scene. Some men even like to wear such skirts, for the same reason! In addition to delighting in the live music, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and creative and easy-to-learn choreography, contra dancing is great exercise! Therefore, tank tops and/or lightweight shirts and tops are preferred upper wear at a contra dance. Finally, shoes should be comfortable above all, but the best shoes to wear would have leather or suede on the bottom, in order to be able to glide smoothly across the floor.
Another idea for smooth gliding on a cafeteria floor is: FUZZY SOCKS! IF you can get fuzzy socks (with no grips on the bottom) to put OVER your shoes, you'll be able to spin better on our floor AND make a cute fashion statement!
